How does this thingy work? I thought to take a white balance, you needed a grey card with the lighting in your room/scene falling on it?..

these things work by taking a photo through it then setting that photo as your source image for custom white balance i believe. you can do the same thing without that part. the camera is doing all the work. there are several versions of this floating around and i believe the most expensive

nice, be it a bit expensive.
it compresses the light on a white little ball. so that the light becomes a good even balanced middle tone, for your entire environment, whilst when you don't do that little sources of light in your space and even reflections can fuck up the measurements.
simple as that.
- this is somewhat safer than a grey card, but all depends on the complexity of your environment.janne76

So it blurs your view and makes everything whiter?... (for taking the white balance)

just google "Coffee Filter White Balance"

ok i get it now. The purpose of using a flat grey card is to illuminate any specular effects of light but this does the same thing, except for everything the viewfinder sees rather than just a specific mid tone. I think?

or just use your camera as is as this is how it was built and prepared.
