I know it's not a desktop program but I am currently using Backblaze, an online service.

i have wondered if any of these online services offer archiving and in case of emergency can send you data via cd, dvd, usb or larger so as not to wait for downloads or if a good connection is unavailable

version3 - amazons S3 service will actually do that, although you'll pay quite a pretty penny for S3 itself.
I'm sure you can just ask many providers to do this, and if not, i'm sure it will become more common place within a year or 2

When Backblaze says "unlimited storage" does it really mean that?
Eg I know with Mozy, if you delete files from your computer, they get deleted from Mozy, hence it's not actually unlimited storage

Backblaze charge a premium to send your files via DVD... around $190. But you can restore via download for free.

You didn't specify straight data storage versus back-up/restore, so assuming the latter is the more important, Acronis True Image has worked very, very well for me.
