I'm looking for something that I can install on my web server that allows:
- uploading of a bunch of files via FTP
- creation of usernames and passwords for clients to login and download the files easily in a browserany suggestions or things that you've tried that might fit the bill?
Thanks in advance.

I was thinking of that, but was trying to find something pre-made first.

Here is my Subfolio... testing at the mo...
http://subfolio.adance.co.uk/- That's wicked. If it has a back-end to add users, it's exactly what I want. Is it free?bmacneill

who is your host? what level of control do you have on your server? if you are on a shared server, you can't install your own ftp software.

i'm on MT with a grid server.

how long did it take to get a subfolio invite?

ftp is handled by software separate from your whole web world/apache, so any solution for that server is going to involve a web-based file uploader, not ftp, if that's an issue. your only option in this case is to move to a vps that lets you install your own apps.

It was in Beta... email them and ask for a copy. Is good, Initial curve to get your head around and to be flexible you need CSS knowledge. There isn't much documentation out yet but they responded to my q's quite quickly.
You can set permission for certain files to certain users. I intend to use it as a file repository for my client requests... the amount of times I get "Can you just send me..."

Here's the old Area17 portfolio, which was the origin of Subfolio:

Oh, it has no File uplaod though.. that is all via my FTP.
So I set it all up and the client downloads to their hearts content

There is also a "plugin" that let's you show website build.

Dancer, that's exactly what I was looking for. I want to just do a mass dump of files to it via FTP and then have the clients download them via browser.

I wanted to use it for audio files. No go?

From there support:
"Depending on your servers PHP settings, auto-generating thumbnails for very large images may be problematic. This limit allows you to set a cap (we recommend 5MB). You can create custom thumbnails for high resolution images instead."
I have a lot of large images and to create a lot of thumbs is not ideal for me... esp. if they are images
- Depending on what you web host allows (memory usage) you can raise the limit, so you can create thumbnails for larger files too.mubs
