Quark Help - file extensions missing

I've been tasked with making updates to a document that was made in some older version of Quark. When I got the files, I found the folder was filled with files that had no file extension (eg. "'WritingCheck' TIFF"). I added all the .qxd's and .tif's needed and most of the files were fine, however four images that seem they should be .tifs are not playing nice. All four are from the same document, and other images in that document updated fine.
I am at a loss. I've tried all sorts of file extensions for these, just in case these four images were randomly a different image type in a sea of tiffs, but had no success. I don't have access to any other versions of these images either, since the vendor we used is long gone.
Has anyone had this problem with Quark stripping file extensions? Can anyone offer me some good advice? Thanks in advance!

CyBrain, I cannot thank you enough! That was the one type I forgot to try. Why someone would embed a raster image in an eps and then stick that eps inside a picture box is beyond me.
THANKS!

Photoshop EPS lets you use a clipping path for transparency.
