The reason why the Midwest industrial states are hurting isn't really a secret - it's because of globalization. Those areas specialized in manufacturing, and all of that has now been moved to third world countries where it can be done more cheaply.

A lot of the problems in Detroit are strictly local. Many bad decisions made by local and state politicians over a period of about 40 years led to what is now an irreversible decline for the city itself. The surrounding metro area is still doing reasonably well, and there are many nice places to live around Detroit. But Detroit itself is turning to farmland.
