I spent a few years at a small shop that functioned like a full-service branding agency to a couple clients. What that means is that I was able to learn firsthand how to apply strategy to design, rather than simply moving from project to project. Now on my own, I'm an even smaller shop (i.e., less manpower but lower fees), with the ability to apply what I've learned in the past. Granted, I don't have the whole 20 years experience thing going for me.
So to answer your question, I suppose there's absolutely nothing different about me.
