It seems after reading the comments that most people use Fireworks for UI - that's a surprise to me as it's so slow and buggy I only use it for animated gifs.

Fireworks is flawed in many ways and quite buggy but for UI work there is no contest. It's just so much faster for creation and layout of buttons/forms etc.
I used to use PS for everything, then started working somewhere that was 90% Fireworks, took a little time but I'm never going back to PS for UI layout work.Main benefits:
Pages, copy/pasting of appearance, 9-slice resizing, flash style document library, no need to dig around the layers palette, exporting every page in a site to jpegs with a single click, infinitely stackable filters/styles.
