Hello I am trying to find some information on disabling or hiding some of the dashboard features in my wp 2.8 installation. I only have a few authors who will be logging in and posting but i dont want a lot of the options to be visible. I tried a few plug ins but they all give me php errors at the end of the day.
any suggestions?

you can turn on the elements in the dashboard with 'screen options' (top tight on the dashboard): http://codex.wordpress.org/Admin…

Yea that showed me how 2 put all the preliminary stuff back.
I was talkin bout the left side menu items

the options in the side-panel are related to the 'role' of the user. You as an admin see everything, but an author wouldn't. And a contribitor would see even less.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plug… is the bomb, you can set the screen options globally on a role basis and remove items from the left menu too

tell me what you want to disable and i'll give you some code for your theme's functions.php file that will work for you.

well you won't find any admin stuff in your theme, my suggestion to use your theme's functions.php file is because it's an easy place to stash some code that will run whenever your theme is activated. for every process that goes into building a page, wordpress provides "hooks" to let you add your own code. the idea is to hook into the admin head action and filter out the data you don't want to be seen depending on the current user's capabilities. for instance, i use this bit of code to hide the link to dashboard and tools menu for any user that can't edit posts...
