Thanks so much everyone! I'm really happy with the responses.
Sounds to me like I need to set up another photoshoot this week ;)
I took all the photos with a 15MP Canon Digital Rebel T1 w/ a lighting rig, but then I optimized them in Photoshop in order to dial down the file size and the load time. Maybe I should sacrifice the extra couple seconds for better quality photos. What would you guys suggestion for a "Home" image (The laptop/iPhone picture now)?
Thanks again for all the comments!!
- don't use any additional lighting, use a macro len and shoot from an angle.utopian

I like it although there are bugs. I clicked on one folio item but then clicked on another one and the wrong text content was up.

I like the fullscreen idea, but the photos need work. Looking at Snow Leopard Conservation and Parasite, for example. They look like they were shot on your iPhone.
You used a Canon Rebel and a lighting rig?
Most of the photos appear to show the noise of a high ISO. If you're using some sort of studio lighting, you should have enough light to shoot at ISO100 or 200.
The color is poor, too. It looks like you used mixed lighting, or ikea lamps. Re-shoot using a single type of light (you'll need to match the monitor's color with the color of the lights,) then white balance correctly or shoot RAW and fix the WB in Photoshop.
Overall they aren't very sharp. You might want to rent or borrow a macro lens.
For the photos of the laptop, it could be better to photograph the laptop while it's shut down. Then you could place screenshots of your work on the laptop in Photoshop. Of course, you'll need much better photos of the laptop for it to look real.
- I shot indoor with lighting setup on ISO 400 and the noise was much greater than I had thought you could get at 400. re-shot the whole thing down at 100 and adjusted lighting appropriately. muuuch better.MrNibs

- Yeah. I was considering taking out Parasite and Brainwave Synthesis because those can't be reshot. The snow leopard project is up at the Philly Zoo and I need to reshoot.enkayes

I like the idea, but the execution lacks polish, Your photos are mostly lousy. Bottom line— if I were browsing websites looking to hire someone, that someone would NOT be you. You should probably rethink your approach.
- This photo approach works best for environmental pieces, packaging and print work. For sites, not so much.monospaced
- I was just experimenting with the idea. I liked it, but I suppose the community here feels differentlyenkayes

I know the laptop thing is part of your concept, but get rid of it (at least on the pages for each of your project images) and the site will look 90% better. If not only because the quality of the images will be more presentable.
- and the images will be easier to scan through. right now they are at an angle.juhls

Thanks for the feedback!
Instead, are you suggesting that I replace with just a screenshot?
- enkayes0
I used a Lowell Xenon light kit with a difuser umbrella. I'm still getting used to the new camera and will have to look into messing with the ISO. I'm not a photographer by any stretch.
Thanks for the feedback!

If it's full screen, it will have to be a photo. Screenshot won't give you a large enough image. I think we are just saying, remove it from the context of being on a laptop on a table in your house;)

Understood. My only concern is that I don't want users to think that they've left the page and went to another site...but I will definiately experiment.
Another thought, what if I added a link in each project to view the photos by themselves (if by LightBox or Flickr page)?

i think the photos needs to be better quality and the type is too big. But other than that the transitions seem good

in case what?

Oh! My URL.
I realize it doesn't ready this way, but it was intended to be the phonetic pronounciation of my initials; nks. So en kay es.

man up and show the sites as flats. you cannot make web work look cool in photography the way Made Thought can for print, its just not possible. Lose the shame, you work in a different medium, in many ways your job couldn't be more different.

those images of your laptop and screen are terrible.

Yeah, that's been pretty much established at this point. I'm going to reshoot tomorrow and adjust the ISO/White balance.
Thanks for your feedback :)

hey nick, when the site first loads, you don't see your name anywhere, except in the browser toolbar. why not?

Hey Jimmy! Long time no talk!
My name bares little weight at this point so therefore I've given it little real estate. If someone is interested in my work, I've offered plenty of options to contact me.- I feel like once people recognize you for your work, your name isn't important; but until then, you could give yourself a little more credit.
But In that case, you don't think you should have your work appear when the user first reaches the site?jamesworks - credit.

- I feel like you promote your work before you promote yourself. Once your name gains notoriety, then promoting your name becomes the easier way to market.enkayes

I happen to really like the big clean type and overall navigation. I'm not going to go into the work itself since I can be pretty harsh sometimes and a lot of people have made suggestions in that area that I back up whole-heartedly. I would definitely keep the site as envisioned, keep refining it, and get that work up to par. You'll do fine.

Thanks to all who provided tips on changing the ISO and White Balance. I was doing some experimenting during lunch and I posted my favorite photo from the shoot as my homepage image (for the sake of sharing). Let me know what you think.
