So, I have to work on Windows now for a contract job and I want to get a PC laptop. What can I get for under $1500? I use Photoshop and Illustrator pretty exclusively...with some Dreamweaver thrown in for fun.

Do you need a dedicated graphics card, vs that graphics accelerator memory sharing thing?

Thanks. I'm looking for a 15ish". I'm working off a 13" now and it's not terrible but I travel and work remotely too much for it to be great.
I have no idea about the graphics card...would I need it with CS4?
And is there a brand that is better than others? I am a Mac person and clueless about PCs.

I've had my eye on this one:
- Are you happy with it? A coworker has one and it is a brick!monkeyshine

...um, just asking - but why do you need dedicated Windows hardware to do a Windows oriented job? If it is really a necessity, rent something and get it done as quick as you can... ...of course if the client is covering the cost, blow your load... =]

Renting is a possibility...but it's a 6 month gig so by the time I end it I could have paid for a laptop. I'm considering getting a laptop because the one the company has provided is poo and I want something nicer to work on.
- gotcha - renting = mat'l billable... but if necessary, see the link above ^^DoktorDavid

Get a Dell or a Thinkpad

sony Vaio

I'd recommend Vaio, if its within budget. They're a little pricier, but they're (in my experience, anyway) really solid and well built. Do Toshiba still make good machines? I know I seriously considered one back when I got my laptop, and I know they did the best in class Netbook earlier this year. Have a look, anyway.
Fuck Dell - the only good thing they 'make' are LCDs. I've never bought a Dell machine personally, but I know a few that have, and all except the most n00b of users have hated them or ended up hating them because they serially fuck up.
As for GPUs - unless you're really, genuinely, properly expecting to do some serious gaming - don't bother. You'll eke out more battery time and get a slimmer, cooler machine in the deal. I'd also try and go sans-disc drive, and just buy an external. Imo, anyway.
Have fun!
- Sorry - if you're planning on doing video work, a GPU might not be a bad idea.. it uses that shit, right?detritus

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm leaning towards either Vaio or ThinkPad. I think my Mac friends are planning an intervention for me. :)

what's wrong with just getting a refubished mbp and installing windows on that?
i use windows primarily for development and that's my setup.

I just ordered a Dell Latitude E6400 with 4 gigs of RAM and a 250gb hard drive. It seems like a decent enough machine without the bling.
