so my boss hands me a sony handy cam and a firewire cable and says " my pc doesn't have firewire, your mac does, we need to get the video off of here"
So I plug in and expect the handycam to show up like a camera does, but it does not... I can't seem to see it anywhere and on top of that network settings says that the firewire is not connected.
but in i movie it will pick up a live feed from the camera while plugged in...
so how do I actually access the video on the handycam? any ideas?

Turn the camera to VCR mode (or whatever equivalent)

Sony is fickle with their hardware, chances are you'll need a driver or UI software app associated with that model off their site. Install, Restart, Connect.

nah, it was just VCR mode, one it was set to that, import to imovie, export as .mov, everyone's happy.
This was just a test, tomorrow will be interesting when they try to hook it up to a win machine.

Firewire only shows up in Network if the device connected is capable of TCP/IP stuff, I think.
