Use animations...

depends.
you could do a video of using the site if the focus is for usability.
with, small image thumbnail to a 1024x768 zoom, or larger view.i don't agree with sticking it in a browser frame or a imac/macbook screen though, as it can give the impression that your a mac fan boy.

That particular photo method looks a tad on the contrived side to me

yeah, I'd only use the photo method if the site is a pretty small afterthought to a branding or print project. If you want anyone to see what the thing is actually like I'd avoid.

Those closeup pics of screens are pish and doesn't show off the site at all.
You could take photos of a screen or mobile device in context.
Like if your site was for something to do with transport then take a photo of someone using the site on their iphone in a train station. What about a screen recorder and record the usability of a site, speed up the video a bit so that it's quicker than actual interaction, keep the video physically small in size.
The best way to show off a site is to have a decent sized screengrab image/thumbnail of a page and a link to the actual site.
DONT crop some obscure area for your thumbnail. That annoys the tits off me. Something will look interesting and intreaguing from the thumbnail then you are let down when you get to the actual site when you find out its actually not as interesting as the thumb was.

You should bring the whole thing into after effects, build it up from multiple 3d planes, have the camera pan wildly before zooming out to reveal that it was just a static blog all along.
