I am not really sure what kind of system would be best for this particular situation. Hopefully you guys can help me out.
I want to create a system where I can upload files for my clients to a webserver so they can log in and only see/download the specific files I assign to their own account. I would like to post revisions/final artwork to their account, so I wouldnt always have to email them the files, and I can just refer them to my site, and they can download the files.
Is there a particular CMS that is perfect for this kind of situation?

If you want, I have some code that will do that. you might want to style it up a little, because it is very plain looking. But, it works by creating a directory for each client on your server. They can visit that, traverse the directories within their folder, but never view another clients folders. You can upload everything via FTP.
Interested? if so, I'll zip it up for you.

i, also, would be interested in an answer to this. i end up uploading .zip files to my webserver and sending the link to my clients... but this is not the most elegant way to do it i am sure.

yeah thats what I am doing, and I would like a more "professional" way of going about it. I do like the possibilities of basecamp, but it seems a little too much for my needs at the moment.

What cms or other s/w is in place on your web server host right now?

At the moment I've created client folders on our server space and upload files through FTP.
Instead of sending loads of links, I'll create a job-specific HTML page with all the work listed on. From each of those links I'll upload any updated visuals or files etc so that both the client and I have complete record of what we've sent and how many revisions they've asked for. It definitely brings to light how many updates and amends you have to make/get signed off.
Bit of a ramble I know. So in short:
- Create Client Folders on your serverspace ie (www.yoursite.com/clients/client...
- Then create any job specific folders within that client folder
(www.yoursite.com/clients/client...
- Then create a HTML file that will show a list of all updated links ot visuals files etc.It could be better by providing a layer of security, but the way I see it, unless someone knows the exact URL for other jobs you've created, they can only see their project link.
Make sense? probably not :-)
- easy to add passwords OR give the folder a long random name and post the client a URLcomicsans
- yep, I'm looking into how to create a better system at the moment. Password protection and a simple inhouse CMSNot_Just_Another
- should speed up uploading files to the serverspace tooNot_Just_Another
