Oil industry whistleblower alleges that oil production figures are being massaged to hide the truth about peak oil.

If you're interested in this field (scuse the vague pun), you should keep occasional tabs on http://www.theoildrum.com/ .
I can't find it (I think it may have been censored...) but I started a Peak Oil thread a couple of years ago after seeing graphs on the above site implying that we were at least knee-deep in peak oil already. I was quite shocked at the time, but then came to appreciate that the concept of peak oil itself is a nebulous one - one might argue that we hit peak oil in the 70s, by measures of ease of extraction. 'Clearly' that's not the case.
We probably are - but, we're always told that 'new and improved' extraction and refinement technologies will maintain the status quo for decades yet... one might argue that this is industry propoganda, but if it were, prices would be rising in kind already. They're not.
Personally, I take every such possibly- slightly- shrill announcement as a positive. Population numbers aside, we've already got most of the technologies in place for a post-oil transition world... it's just going to be a bit expensive.
We lucky westerners probably won't even notice the difference, aside from quieter vehicles and longer-running iPods.
Yaay us!
