Am I right in thinking they are both modern versions of an old font made for the Times Newspaper? One modernised by Apple and one by Microsoft? If so, which s which?

I believe it was a response by an english typographer that saw a version of what we call Plantin and said "this has to be better, it has to be british" (obviously paraphrasing)... and designed it as a response...

I'll admit this is something I heard from someone that I respect enough to take an opinion on spec. So, I really shouldn't talk with any authority on this, but I BELIEVE this was the origin on TNR... Sorry if I'm wrong ;-)
