I signed a contract with a company to design their branding.
They paid me 1/2 deposit.
I worked roughly 40 hours on the branding thus far.
Now they are changing their company name. What would you do in this situation?
Thank you!

Submit full invoice for time spent, negotiate a new contract.

I would tell them to pay for the extra work

Does the name change negate all the work you've done thus far?

MEFFID:
Send them an invoice for the completion of the project even though we were in the middle of development? Rate was project based and not hourly.GORDY:
new name = new thought process no?- new name doesn't mean new process. Their core "brand" should be the same. They are still doing xyz just with a diff nameMHDC

when you do 'project based rate' it's based on a certain number of hours, no?
bill the hours completed and renegotiate a new contract.
or get walked all over.
- or an estimated percentage of what you had completed. If you figure you were 20% of the way done, charge 20% of the total contractlocustsloth

I hope you've got a caveat written into your contracts which protects you if the scope changes. In other words, the client pulls this kind of madness with you, and you refer to the contract and say "it says here per our agreement that if the scope changes, I'll start charging hourly.
If this is the case, I wouldn't recommend sending the invoice now. Just make sure they understand they'll end up paying you more, keep close tabs on your hours, and tack the addition on to the final bill. Explain to them exactly why this causes you return to the drawing board, and that everything you've done to date is now useless.

Go with what Kid is saying_
40 hours = What percentage complete.Give them a bit of flexibility on the new rate because of their change.
In the end its always working together for a proper end result.

or talk to them. Tell them that you have to basically start over, and so you need to charge more. If they tell you not to change anything except the name and carry on, then it's just one of those things so swallow it and keep moving on
