how can the pilots manipulate a black box? seems the black box would have to be tampered with before

Couldn't find another thread on the plane that overshot Minneapolis airport by 150 miles. Some claims the pilots were asleep. Some that they were fighting. The pilots couldn't be raised by air traffic control or the crew.
I have another thought.
Apparently the black box on this plane only holds 30 minutes of tape before looping. I reckon the pilot and co-pilot either said something highly inappropriate, or were enaged in a lurid sex act and thought the only way to make it disappear would be to erase the tape and fly for another half hour.
