Genius? maybe, maybe not. But they are certainly original.
I've always enjoyed them. I am partial to Panda Bears solo work. His last album was killer IMO

Animal Collective in concert = Crazy shit. You don't need drugz.
I've seen them 3 times in concert and they are amazing. But i understand it's not for everyone.

I think they're pretty great, but wouldn't go as far as to say they're "genius"... I've only seen them once live and the sound was pretty awful, not sure if it was them or the venue... that said, I'm a bandwagon jumper here and only really liked the last album...

Dont expect to hear the actual songs in concert. They change everything from A to Z. They turn everything super experimentalish and guess what, their songs are for most already experimental... the result is just like being on drugs.

Didn't do it for me. A review I read summed it thus - the album is all upper-range noise - it's the aural equivalent of staring into the sun.

A creative genius is often subjective, so to say they suck live is pointless as we'll get nowhere. I like the way they make you lose yourself in such a natural drug-like way. They have some great moments, then some weaker points. Every band has weaker areas, but it's because they keep trying new things that makes them interesting.
