bad web hosts

I've been using www.studentwebhosting.co.uk since 2003 when I first made a portfolio website.
The service I originally signed up for cost £30 and included a free domain name. So it's been free ever since.
However it would seem they have changed the service they offer, now they no longer offer a free domain name. Although they've never emailed me to inform me of this change in service pricing.
I've recently been invoiced for £30. So I paid it. Then my website went offline. So I checked with whois - and it said my domain name needed renewing.
So I figured www.studentwebhosting.co.uk had forgotten to do the admin and renew it for me. So I emailed them asking them to renew it for me.
They did. My website was back online.
Then they invoiced me for £14.99 to cover a 2 year domain renewal fee. A fee i'd not agreed to or ever been told about
I'm now stuck - I don't want to pay £14.99. I want my £30 back so I can use a better hosting service and so that I can renew my domain name with 123-reg at only £3 a year. Had I been told before I renewed my hosting that I'd need to pay an additional £14.99 I wouldn't have bothered.
But they won't refund me £30 until I pay the £14.99 fee!
I've checked all the emails they've sent to me and they've never mentioned a £14.99 renewal fee. It doesn't even mention it on their website.
How do I get out of this one?

Pay the £14.99, and in the time you saved wondering how to get out of it, do some freelance work which will earn you more money

true, it's not much money at all.
just pisses me off that they're being nobs about it.

agreed, but the chances of them realising they're nobs and giving you your money back, are slim to none. I'd just pay it, forget about it and move on to a better host. I'm using Heart Internet, probably not as cheap but never had a problem with them.

123-reg with (mt) gs. Depends on what your needs are. For now pay it and then prevent it next time.

pay it and change to someone decent and cheap, dreamhost are good methinks
