So a client has given me a job of designing an app for a BlackBerry. I can't seem to find any information anywhere regarding what controls should look like, visual standards, etc when designing an app for BB. Does anybody know? Apple is really anal about this stuff, but it doesn't seem like RIM gives a toss.

Applications designed for BlackBerry® devices should provide a balance between the best possible user experience and a long battery life. When you design your BlackBerry device application, consider the differences between mobile devices and computers. Mobile devices have the following characteristics:
* a smaller screen size that can display a limited number of characters
* slower processor speeds
* wireless network connections with a longer latency period than standard LANs
* less available memory
* shorter battery life
* one screen appears at a timeMobile device users use applications on their mobile devices differently than they would use applications on a computer. On mobile devices, users expect to find information quickly. For example, a customer relationship management system can provide a massive amount of information, but users only require a small amount of that information at one time. The BlackBerry device UI is designed so that users can perform tasks easily and access information quickly.
Before you design your application, consider using the existing applications on the BlackBerry device or the BlackBerry Smartphone Simulator to learn more about the navigation model and best practices for designing the UI for your application.

argh, reading RIM specs.... it all looks very Java-developer-oriented, which in my previous experience means that the developer may do much of the final work, the process may be develop first, then add design tweeks rather than develop according to a design.... and/or you may have to sit with the developer while they code things and you tweek design...

Wow, thanks guys. You've all been a huge help, and thanks for the compliment akrok.
From what I'm reading/understanding... you can basically design whatever you want as long as it fits into something that you can achieve with java, cause BB doesn't have interface standards really. Is this because RIM is content on buying someone else's applications and tweaking them rather than building their own? I heard they bought a browser cause theirs sucked.

screen aspect ratio differ in various BB devices

Display spec.. oooooh

Yes, comparing apps on my friends BB devices and my friend's iPhone shows how inconsistent the BB apps look.... BB doesn't place a priority on regular interface standards... this may be good for you, as you can stand out a bit....

UI Guidelines... ohhhh

You can use the Plazmic® Composer to create interactive and animated graphics for BlackBerry® devices. Creating content for BlackBerry devices involves the following basic steps:
Creating and editing: Design and create interactive and graphical content using the Plazmic Composer. You save project files in the Plazmic Composer (.cp) format.
Testing: Preview your content using the BlackBerry Smartphone Simulator, which you can launch directly from the Plazmic Composer.
Exporting: Export your Plazmic Composer files to .svg, .pme, or .pmb format.
Posting: Post your Plazmic Composer content on an application server using the Plazmic® Content Developer’s Kit.

I'd be curious to hear from somebody who's used Plazmic
I had a conversation with a java developer who works on mobile devices.. he said that things that are designer-friendly are often developer-unfriendly, ad things that are developer-friendly are often designer-unfriendly....
