Hey, anybody know any colleges in California with quality design programs? Good professors, competitive students, etc?

The gigantic debt problem is much more than you think these days... I was lucky to get some scholarship $ and go before tuition skyrocked and jobs got commoditized.... I know more than a few great designers who left school for $$ reasons as well as a general feeling they weren't getting what they wanted, and some of them are great designers... at least here, the industry doesn't seem to care if/where/ you went to school unless you want to teach or get certain grants....

I went to Art Center in Pasadena. Luckily I was able to get scholarships to cover most of tuition because that place was excessively expensive. I can only image how expensive it must be now. If I had to go into much debt to go there, I don't think it would be worth it.

I went to a program in NY that had good professors and great competition among students that helped the overall experience of the place. I'm looking for a setup like that for my niece, who's looking to go on the west coast.

BEST ADVICE EVER:
Get your general education requirements filled at a community college before attending a pricey private design school. That way, you may be able to compress your education into three years (as I did at CalArts), AND concentrate entirely on your major, instead of spreading yourself across GE and core courses.Just my two cents.

- sounds like a good idea.akrokdesign
- +1. Did my undergrad at SF State. The quality of the classes is way better than any art school.sisu

I'd recommend looking into design programs at some liberal arts/ state universities. Your education will be a little more well rounded. Once you've spent 2 years doing generals and intro classes, you'll be spending practically all your time in graphic design. That, and you'll spend a whole lot less.
