if it's the model from around 2 years ago, this is a common logic board problem and there's a free replacement program. Happened to me as well.

I'm taking it in tonight.
Sounds exactly like the logic board problem.
Any tips for getting this sorted for free? There's the small issue of me not having the receipt.

They know the date of sale, you can check it online too:

not sure about in the uk, but i just dropped my mpb off at the apple store for a new logic board (it's second). my machine is 2.5 years old so out of warranty. apple has a tier-1 support service where the machine is shipped back diagnosed and repaired for a flat $310. given that a logic board will run about $500-700 it's a good idea to ask them to do the tier-1 when you meet with them.
if you have one of the nvidia ones, it should be covered under the recall. mine is the first model mbp with the intel core duo processor and an ati radeon card. there are apparently issues with this one as well, but apple will not recall it.

Praise be to Apple! They were uber polite and are fixing it for free as a victim of the nvidia problem.
I didn't have to kill anyone or nothing!

Have you got it in writing how long it will take moth? Make sure you get the names of everyone you speak to until you get your machine back. I ended up having to go back in on a Sunday and wait until they fixed my machine (same issue) or I probably still wouldn't have got it back yet.
