Helvetica or Arial for web copy

We once did a site using helvetica and when we presented it to the client on their pc, it looked crappy. Maybe try it and test it.... but what the fuck does the client know about fonts???
Whenever they make a 'smart comment' like that, I respond with so many technical terms, crap and even made-up words that I confuse them and they end up saying.. ' well, you're the one that knows...'

Can I express my amazement that the very first response wasn't simply "Helvetica isn't a system font / not everyone will have it?"

Isn't this the most widely used solution if you'd like Helvetica but don't want to screw things up?...

um... isn't arial just helvetica tweaked for the screen?
i say get over the imaginary helvetica hipness and use what looks good on-screen
