I was just curious how people organize their thoughts when building out new online ideas. I love getting into wireframes and design, but sometimes a little restraint is needed to make sure you have all of the other components in place first - like the strategy and processes. Text editors seem a bit too mundane. Basecamp is a bit of an overkill. Any thoughts / links / etc.?

Backpack is nice if you consider Basecamp overkill
If you think both of those are overkill, keep a journal for business related stuff. I use a grid-ruled Moleskine.
OmniGraffle is also great if you need to do mockups or map out decisions or processes.
