Some of the crap I've seen these guys do and get paid a fortune is amazing. I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but damn there are a hell of a lot of dodgy ones.

I know a very good one in London ... and he's a jolly nice chap.

There's alot of bullshitters out there. I get 3 emails a week that are canned "we want you to be on the first page of google" type bullshit.
I've written quite a posts on SEO that you shouldn't pay for as well as done a video on it.

i had someone tell me they wanted to be first on google for "jobs" and this was going to be the most important part of the project for me.

its a shame (its my industry) a lot of people read the blogs. download the whitepapers and think they know it all...
even the 'experts' dont really know whats going on with the uk serps right now.
best tip is to ask what campaigns theyve done from scratch (not taken over from another seo company) and see where theyre at for 1/2 word terms...
the second one is to ask 'do you buy links' and then see some examples (you can always do a backlink check on their portfolio so see the quality of their link building efforts which is often funny)

@mydo even some of the big names in the industry who charge 4 and 5 figures per month dont really know what theyre doing.

The field is constantly changing . . . I started out learning SEO and now I'm mostly focusing on social media consulting . . . I actually get paid to set up Twitter accounts and Facebook accounts . . . I do social media campaigns for the clients of various companies

SEO is obviously not 100% complete bollocks. Unfortunately (well fortunatley) im starting a new job that involves a little SEO.
Are there any reliable resources I should be checking out?oh and its not social media consulting anymore its social buisness design now...
