The good news is that they won't overhaul actionscript again.
There's more here in a video of a demo from Flash on the Beach. Don't blame me for the shakiness. I wasn't there holding that camcorder.

No, there's no word on a release date. I would figure next August but that just a guess that it would come out two years after CS4.

good: no more actionscript = actionscrapped
bad: appears to be more new features than bugfixes

Interesting - is there a release date for CS5?
- clearThoughts0
Already??? I'm still on CS3. WTF - these Adobe people only really want to leave you behind so that you have to pay for an update - right?
- no. just don't upgrade if you don't want to. simple.airey
- but if you exchange files with other developers, they to do the "save as cs3" ritual....vaxorcist
- I'm on CS3 too. I don't use flash though.section_014

Maybe Adobe will sneak it into their next bullshit CS5 upgrade...

I don't mind an upgrade every other year. Every 18 months is not good for the industry. Especially in a recession.
As for the bug fixes, I have a feeling that will be handled. The Flash on the Beach demo was focusing on new features.

I WANT them to overhaul AS again....there are a lot valid reasons people gripe about it.
The flash IDE is in no way responsible for flash's success. I had hoped when adobe bought macromedia that the IDE would have gotten a serious refresh then, to make it more like working in photoshop. But when that didn't happen i just said fuck the IDE.
These days its FDT, Flash Develop or Textmate.
- they should just add C# and haXe. yea, http://haxe.org That thing can compile to AS2 and JSPupsipu

I'm beta testing CS6 right now.

the flash actions editor is being upgraded to a decent tool, and integration with flashbuilder(formerly flex builder) is fairly tight.
as far as cs4 bugs: when it first shipped it was buggy but there's been an update out for a while now that fixed most all of those. if yours is still buggy, in flash go to help > updates or something and it will dl updates.
- what if you don't have a legit copy (theoretically speaking)mydo

pupsipu - Joe ebert presented a c# and java to swf compiler at FOTB

aww really? not AS4? come on!!!

hoping for more super useful features like the vine fill too

oh god I was taking the piss and they have actually expanded the vine tool

I don't fairly give a shit about flash iteslf anymore.
I mean, i'm still using the same way as i was using flash MX. and the action panel is amateurish compared to any eclipse IDE.
To me nowadays the only thing that really matters is the integration with flashbuilder. The only thing they could really improve on the IDE is that aftereffects-like controls and that fucking useless Bones system that has a lot of potential but until now is utter crap.
- flash seems to have ignored the designers and focussed on java-like development stuff too muchvaxorcist
- definitely, I'm certain no one on the dev team actually makes anything in the IDEBIGGESTDOGINTHEWORLD

"useless Bones system"
Sounded good, then you try it and find it performs fucking dogshit.
What a joke, Adobe needs to give everyone in charge of Flash a copy of After Effects and a day course so they have a chance to see something done fucking right.

Interesting ideas Autokern.....
not to turn this into a gripe list, but if Adobe asked me what should be in future editions of flash I'd say:
1. Recognize that you have designers and devlopers, and that designers may want to script a bit but not become total code-heads, so a simplified, "simple-actionscript" may be very useful2. Recognize that alot of people are re-inventing the browser in flash with code to do "back buttons" and "deep linking" with rather complicated code, if such things were built into the player environment, it would be much easier to decide budgets for flash projects....
- this history of scripting languages seems to go from 1.0=simple 2.0= feature-rich but ugly to3.0= re-inventing java....vaxorcist

The idea is a very powerful tool for creating interfaces.
The amount of code and time that can be saved by laying out elements in the ide is huge.
I have built pretty big projects entirely in the ide.
Again it boils down to the programmer and the way they structure their code.
- can you give details at all? I've inherited alot of spaghetti code flash projects....vaxorcist
- Recent example http://www.moofe.com…
vlakken - moof is quite nicely done....vaxorcist
- thats exactly the sort of thing should be built in HTML these daysBIGGESTDOGINTHEWORLD

The first thing that I did when I started coding in as3 was to develop a system in which I could achieve the same functionality in terms of simplicity
that as2 offers in particular buttons enterframe events etc.I wrote a class that takes a movieclip and adds functionality to it that aloows events such as onRelease onPress etc and enterframes to be used just like in as2.

The big adv of flash is in the visual layout you can do of your object and then attach them to classes (instead of coding grounds-up a visual object). At least, that's the way i work.
On the inbetween space of flash and photoshop and illustrator, they are soon releasing Catalyst, which should allow you to basically wireframe your visual project in some sort of dev-ready thing (like classes already set with at least the mouse handlers ready, and such). Seen the demo and looked promising.

Catalyst will be a disaster, drag and drop to build your UI is never gonna work and it will be useless for 90% of designers working in Flash because most use it to make experiences/games/gimmicky shit and not "Rich Internet Applications" or whatever crap Adobe thinks we spend all day making.
And you just know it'll run like shit, or make basic stuff run like shit
- rock&roll0
Catalyst isnt that bad, beta 1 is a little limiting but it could be something good working hand in hand with Flash
