WD media player is the way to go. $100 for that, and then use any usb harddrive you want. Plays virtualy any file type.

Apple tv is a joke. Its a just a giant ipod. I would look into hooking up a mac mini to your tv.

The latest rumor that I heard was that Apple was getting into the CE game and will be putting their set-top software into their own TV's. Should be very cool if that happens.

We went the Mac mini route about two years. I couldn't imagine having a big tv and sound system without one being hooked up to one at this point.

Apple TV is awesome (for what it does), but has some big pitfalls compared to other devices out there. I do love the podcasts, being able to Rent a TV Episode/season and rent a movie.. And to be able to buy them if I want.
That being said, AppleTV won't do 1080p, and won't do Flash (so you watch Hulu if you did install boxxee over the appletv software)
Check out getting a MacMini and put Plex or Boxxee on it. But if all you want is Movies and a few TV episodes and a music player connected to your iTunes on your TV... Apple TV is great.

Does Boxxee allow you to store music on the AppleTV? Seems ridiculous that you can't store and play your music on the thing.
