Raid 1 mirroring worth it?

I just bought a MY BOOK STUDIO EDITION II (2TB)...
I feel like using Raid 1 mirroring is a waste of money for the drive. Because it's only going to give me the capacity of one drive. But with the security of it being mirrored.
The reason I ask, is what is the likely-hood of my iMac and a single external backup crashing at the same time? I'm thinking not likely.
I was planning on splitting the two drives and using one for a MAC OS X backup, and the other for my own manual backup (music, projects, photos etc).
Am I being a foolish fool? Should I mirror my OS X backup for extra security?

If you are using Time Machine, it's not just giving you a mirror of the files on your iMac, its giving you *hourly* versioning, so you can jump back to earlier versions of files (or files that you have deleted accidentally from the iMac), so if you think thats something you wouldn't want to lose, I'd go for RAID mirroring to protect all that history...

There are some people who can tell you horror stories. You won't *need* one until all of your data goes boom. If I had the means to get a Raid 1, I'd do it. I'm currently using Raid 0 and I'm scared to put anything critical in only one place.

I'd say buy enough drives to just do automated backups of everything (whether Time Machine or another program), way safer and easier than doing manual backups.

Here's the problem...
MyBook hard drives fucking blow. I've lost two now, to something as simple as accidentally unplugging them while in the middle of data transfers. Have not been able to recover either with software utilities, and have decided I will never again buy one of those pieces of shit.

I've been meaning to use Time Machine because on the face of it, it actually looks like a proper 'feature' (a rarity in OSX I'm sure you'll agree).
But for the life of me, I can't figure out this other 'feature' where it demands to do everything over the airport. What's that about? Pretty useless really isn't it.

cheers. I think I'll be sensible for once in my life and Raid 1 this shiz.
