Can I use the same OSX disc to reinstall a fresh version of OSX on 2 different MPBs? One of my MBP came with a disc and one didn't. I am very new to mac.

I've had problems trying to install from an OS disc that was packaged with one machine on a different one. Seems that they're somehow encoded to only be installed on the computer they came with. Or I was doing it wrong.
- you're doing it wrong.forcetwelve
- it can depend on the machine type - ie: laptop or macpro tower etc.airey
- I couldn't install OSX on a macbook, disk came with a newer version of the same model.raf

If they're not the same model (and revision), the disk might say no.
If that's the case, you can install system on one machine, link them both via firewire, launch second computer in target mode and clone system via Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!

If you get a system working just the way you want it (System, Application, Fonts and everything) you can Carbon Copy Clone it and setup every new mac that way simply by copying the whole clone across to a partition and using it to boot from :)
Happy Days!

Boxed DVD's are tied to a specific model. Retail DVD's are not.
- my Apple sources say that the actual OS is the same. Once it is loaded cloning is simple and reliable.Amicus

I installed leopard from a mac book on my 3yr old G5 tower and it works fine.

ok. iamaracinghorse was right. The OS disk that came with my MBP did not work on my wifes' MBP. Soooo... next question...
If I upgrade to SL, do I need a working OS X disc for each computer I want to upgrade?

lol

just go buy the retail Snow Leopard upgrade, works on all Macs, no serials..

Thanks

You have to go to options to install a clean system (not upgrade), it's not shown by default, but it's all there on Snow Leopard disk.

The only way you would have an issue here is trying to use that install disk on a MacPro or iMac, there are likely firmware specific items on those restore discs.
