It is not dead, but in some cases you can dispose it.
All studies show that breadcrumb navigation provides better overview and quicker navigation for users, esp. on large/deep sites. Your breadcrumb should include a home link.
You don't need it in your main navigation, if you provide other conventional means of jumping home with a single click. Ie. a logo link in the top of the page.
