well certainly looks more unique and less templaty than that web 2.0 look you had before, because those kinds of colors and gradients in your header never caught on. And there is a longer thread with more long responses. Yay!
I think you need to do the thumbnail grid better. Thumnails are too close together there. Also the other comments about the header being too gigantic have a point. If someone doesn't like the giant overwhelming header, they could bounce.
On 1024 resolution, it takes up half the screen. So crop that thing, make it all smaller and focus on the thumbnails. Don't be afraid to rip off the grid, positioning and sizes of the cargo thumbnails and go from there.
But I think it's good to have some sort of "style id" for the site, so people can remember that it's not the same as 3 other web 2.0 sites with stars and neon colors on dark blue backgrounds with inset text styling.
Either way, you can just put up both styles and watch the stats on each, see to which version people come back to. (Google multivariable testing)
