Hey ny peeps - my wife will be travelling, for the first time, to your fine city, and is scouting around for central (chelsea-ish) hotel advice. She had her heart set on the actual Chelsea Hotel, but we were both a bit putoff by the smell-based bad reviews..
Looking for 260-350$ mark - any nice surprises anyone knows of ?
1000xthanks.

don't really know the hotel scene but check out:

all pretty expensive though...

Chelsea is not central. You would have hard to going to all the places you want to go from Chelsea.
If you are going to stay in Chelsea, I would suggest Meat Packing area.
Hotels in that area:
Standard (new)
Soho House
Gansevoort
Maritime
632 on Hudson
Rooms to Let

What king of "scene" are you looking for? I personally avoid Meat Packing if I can but other love it.
- Agreed, its zoo but thats the only decent area for hotels in Chelsea / West Vil area.MrDinky

Crosby Hotel in Soho / Nolita maybe a good bet. Its opening in end of Sept. I have a room booked there to try out.

the chelsea hotel has a charm to it that i think surpasses all smells that it could possibly have in its hallways. the art in its staircases is better then any gallery show/museum ive ever been to.
the oddballs in the lobby are more then worth the hike downstairs to get a connection.

stayed at their portland one. it was nice. Very "hipstery." I felt like I wasn't cool enough to stay there.
