How do you feel about displaying your portfolio in book form? I am a photographer/designer so I thought doing something like a photo book coupld be interesting. You wouldn't easily be able to update it (maybe once a year) and you also couldn't pick and choose what work you want to display to cater a specific client.
I need to find a company that will let me completely design the layout of the pages. This is one I found....

Anyone know of other good ones?

I think it is so 2001/ 2000. I would go with a one pager. Let your work speak for itself.

what happened to making one on your own? unless your craftsmanship sucks.

Haha, these days it is just cheaper to do it through a site like this, especially if you are having a bunch of copies made.

Find someone in your area with a decent HP Indigo digital press. Best call for short runs. I'm printing 100 copies of my own portfolio in print right now. Judging by the proofs, it'll look hawt. The nice thing about Indigos is that they use wet ink which looks a lot more like regular offset than other digital options.

well true if you're having copies made. but if you want something original and not so cookie cutter id do something like gramme is where you have more freedom. just my opinion.

Think about who you want to show this book to.... how much time and focus they have? Think about how the book may be an extension of your website....
When I find myself agonizing over editing my photo book, I remember hearing that Robert Frank took a year to decide on image selection for "The Americans"

Oh and get this guys, this is something I just now found out while figuring out the specs for my book. On an Indigo, you can use up to two actual PMS spot colors. The only PMS inks you can't get for Indigo are metallics and fluorescents. I'm using a spot gray in my book and it looks really sharp.
The downside is that apparently not a lot of people know about this feature, and/or not it's not very popular for digital jobs, so the ink is on the pricey side and takes about a week to arrive.

seems worth it however, especially for a printed portfolio. thanks for the heads up! ill have to look into this in the future.

Thanks for the info... but what do you think about using a book as a portfolio? Do you think a normal plastic sleeved portfolio etc. is a better way to go?

For interviews, yes. If you need to make a strong impression with clients who are out of town, then a book that you can give them is the way to go.
