i'll be starting some freelance web/flash work next week.. mainly web maintenance, flash banners and some static pages for events, etc.
i was curious what routes others have taken with pay. hourly vs. monthly flat rates.. if i go with a monthly flat rate, how do i control the amount of work given to me through the contract?

have you considered a daily rate? sounds more applicable for you.

Work with a retainer: you will give them (x) hours a month at (y) rate. Anything more then that you charge at (y+whatever). That is what i was doing. Works well.

sleepyfatso/vaxorcist..
so i'll calculate a monthly rate based on my cost and min. of hours set to work.. this monthly rate will be steady even if i do not reach the min. of hours. however, if i go over the hours, i'll charge additional? i'm not sure i understand completely
- that's it exactly. You are in essence guaranteeing your time will be free for that client. They need to pay for that time.Amicus

you could propose that if they can confirm a certain number of hours a month they get a better rate (hourly or weekly). it can be approached in a way that makes them feel special that you're going to block out the time for them and give them that discounted fee but also include a caveat that if the hours aren't met then the reduced fee isn't applied.
