I'm a Mac guy that has to get a PC so please excuse the dumb question. Is it wise to get a computer with Windows XP? Or should I get one with Vista that's offering a free upgrade to Windows 7?

I'd say wait 'till Win 7 comes out. I'm not a big fan of upgrades.

Vista's not bad for windows now if you have to get one I'd go for it, Windows 7 is in the marketing phase it'll probably take them another year after it comes out to release a service pack that makes it useable

Vista = Be sure you have 4GB of RAM or more.
If it's a laptop go with xp, you'll be much happier. If your going with a desktop and it's fast enough, get Vista. I've been running it for sometime and it's pretty sweet if you have a FAST machine. It's rumored that the Windows 7 upgrade will only work by installing it over a copy of Vista. Microsoft did this because with XP there was a way to hack the upgrade to act and install like the retail version (which was much more expensive). Generally speaking upgrading a version of Windows is a really bad idea, since it's not the same as a clean install. So basically I still recommend Vista, but I wouldn't personally use the 7 upgrade....unless you can do a clean install with it.

I like vista better then xp. faster/stable. but make sure u get full software when u buy and not jsut a preinstalled OS with recovery disk. Normally u will want to do a clean install and get rid of all the junk that mnaufactures put on. If thats an option im not to sure. I find it better/cost effective to just build your own. and buy an OS or use a friends. win7 i havent tried, so all i know is the hype/hate of it. probably try it after sp1. or if i decide to switch up my hardware.
