Mac ?: Replaced File Recovery

Not sure if there is anyway to fix this issue, but I had some important data on a folder, and I had a duplicate folder that I copied over to make sure that there wasn't anything missing, but I accidentally hit replace folder, and the folder I copied over was missing a lot of files compared to the destination folder.
Now the new folder is missing stuff... Is there any way of recovering that information? I am almost in a panic here! This is on a MAC by the way.

The files have been deleted, so don't think it can be recovered easily, 3rd party apps maybe. It sucks! (I'm assuming you don't have some automated backup.)
I did that once and then placed an empty textfile with the title "!DO NOT REPLACE FOLDERS.txt" just to always remind myself. (works)

ugh... so annoying, the worst part is that they were newly taken photos so the time machine back up wouldnt. I am currently trying some 3rd party software to try to recover something hopefully

Thanks Ribit for suggesting Data Rescue II
I used it and was able to recover almost a quarter of the Raw files I recently shot. At least its better than nothing. It just bugs be that you cant undo it!
Back your shit up twice! That's my advice

I had a coworked do this recently to files I had been working off of on our server(my bad). She had the same files, just older versions on her desktop and copied them all to the server, copying over all the updated files. Extremely frustrating and our timemachine only backs-up after hours. About 6 hours of vector illustrations gone, poof, nothing.

Time Machine, seriously...... under £80 for a 1TB usb drive, plug it in and turn it on.
No excuses not to backup anymore.
