What's worse -
1) a dash
2) "we are..."
3) a non ".com" ending

dash is considered bad
except for cases like experts-exchange.com

I guess I could add
4) a company name missing one or more vowels;)

I guess it's all pretty much aesthetic these days...since search will deliver you to the right site most of the time.

no probs with search using dashes as said, or a non .com ending. As you said it's down to aesthetics or people remembering it correctly if thats an issue. You can use a non .com or any extension and set your main geo target area for the domain in Google webmaster tools

Two that spring to mind are http://hi-res.net and http://fantasy-interactive.com (now http://f-i.com)

if the primary audience are not being targeted by print advertising or word of mouth (doesn't really happen much does it?) then I'd have no problem with dashes at all if you get a prefered domain, you'll get lots of arguments for both sides tho.... if it's search, bookmarking, social networks etc type promo dashes work fine

Google do all the job for you. Do you think people still type URL these days? NO, that time is over.

non .com is the lamest of all
to be honest if you are branding something from scratch I'd just try your best to find something where the basic name is available.

But is it worth changing your brand just to get a domain? I dunno.
