Hi All.
Seen a Council Graphic Designer vacancy advertised today. 10k more that what I currently earn. I work with a small studio with decent client's creating large format adverts.
Do you think this would be a stupid move for the sake of the extra cash? I have heard it's your career is fucked if you move to a Council and you will struggle to move on from there.
Cheers RB

if you don;t thikn you will ever earn more than that ten k then move, you can do freelance and working for a council is less stressfull and you might be able to make a real difference to the normal stuffy design which people asscociate with council work.

Every day will be a little boring but very easy. No stress or than having to deal with the overly pc systems that you'll have to live by. I turned a council job down once, though I can't say I've never looked back and regretted it as they will pretty much sending you on every training course you desire. Earn the £££ and learn all the skills you wish you had a chance to then leave after a couple of years with more money in your pocket and your brain bulging with more skills.

I think a lot of councils are a bit more clued up nowadays and do outsource some marketing/design work, so you may end up working alongside some decent agencies.
If you are into doing stuff for the public good, and not just "working for the man", then this is the way to go.
Also, a lot of local government stuff is directed from government itself, so you may find yourself working on some big meaty national campaigns.
Die inside? - Not too sure about that.
Well, if your aim is purely to do work which gets in creative review or grafik, then I wouldn't say this is for you.
Also, I know plenty of agencies which love chasing local government work, so it can't be that bad can it?
I think the same rules apply as with anywhere, go and check it out, see if you think you will fit in...

Cheers for all the replies. It is one of the biggest Councils in Scotland if not the biggest so you never know there might be some meaty projects involved. I have created quite a few designs for the public sector, so it's not all new to me. Might apply to see what they are like.
