I went to cardiff once, it's been many years since and I still can't even talk about it.

lived there for many years. you'll find it hard not to laugh at their accent! watch for the 3 words that sound exactly the same:
1. Here
2. Year
3. Earthey pronounce "Yeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrr" and end every sentence with "Liiiiiiiikkkkkkeeeee".
as for clubbing theres alot of coked up cocktail bars by the marriot, queens street has alot of bars but full of stags/hens, the students union has some amazing nights if you can get in, The welsh club on womanby street has some really good djs mostly drumnbass etc..
enjoy cardiff but enjoy the welsh hospitality only when its present (ie hardly ever)
oh yeh and the bus drivers are the most miserable people ive ever seen!

also - check out cardiff bay, but whatever you do, dont walk there from the city centre, you'll get robbed.

Looking forward to that long weekend now Flashbender?

ha ha yeah really, really, really excited now.
I didn't think that 'trepidation' would even factor into how I would approach the weekend.
- Do you have someone over with you that can visit you in hospital?Jnr_Madison
- haha, funnyflashbender

I went there for a few days midweek and seemed alright, its a total boozers city centre at the weekends i've heard and seen on the tv.
Theres an alleyway between two streets in the city centre thats nicknamed Chip Shop Alley by the locals and its full of chip shops and kebab shops. Probably a place to avoid on friday and saturday nights.

I'm not originally from here but to me cardiff is a safe, smallish city with lots of the usual problems but more positive things going for it than most british cities. If you know where to go/look you'll be fine. I haver never had any trouble from anyone etc etc.
what dates will you be going?
the greenman festival is on in a few weeks so if you're there the same time you may find it pretty quiet - http://www.thegreenmanfestival.c…
what kind of stuff are you looking for? art? outdoors? shopping? drinking? raving?
art - there isn't a huge amount to be honest
Diane Arbus and "no such thing as society" exhibitions in the national museum until end of august http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/…http://www.myspace.com/magpiegal…

The Vulcan Pub is one of Cardiff's oldest pubs and to me is a symbol of the ruin of the city - good rough old pub now surrounded on all sides by car parks - http://save-the-vulcan.blogspot.…some decent gig/club promoters

http://www.shermancymru.co.uk/there is some decent shops in the various arcades around the city but bear in mind there is a major redevelopment happening in the centre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lis…
other things - the parks - if it is sunny Bute park is a nice place to chill out - it's pretty much in town - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/But…
If you can rent a car or get a train head to west wales. Once you're past Swansea, Wales has some of the best beaches, scenery in the UK. I think it's better than devon/cornwall mainly because it is less crowded.
Rhosilli bay is one of my favourite beaches in Wales/world - http://www.enjoygower.com/beache…
also - avoid the chip alley area if you can
- lowimpakt0
another good thing about cardiff is the gig spaces tend to be smaller than most cities so it's a much nicer set up...
e.g. we went to see Final Fantasy play last night in a nice venue - http://www.thinkinteractive.co.u… - and when he ran out of time he just said "fuck it, let's go outside" and he continued the gig under some trees in the car park of some methodist centre across the road from the venue..
- flashbender0
wow! that's a lot of stuff.
I don't have any set ideas of what to do - I mean sure I'll see the castle and the bay. but other than that... not really going to be clubbing there, so just some other good stuff to see, nice places to eat, interesting pubs... that sort of thing.
I'll have a look through your links tonight, thanks for posting so much.

My firiend went to cardiff once and he met a girl there and he said.
'yes I got shagged I had no fucking choice in the matter'

I was in Cardiff when Wales beat England in the 6 Nations (2005). As an Englishman, with 3 Welsh blokes, and a packed Queen Street - I've never felt so alone in all my life!
No trouble at all though - well, I didn't open my mouth to give my englishness away though!
The Brains brewery is a must visit though. Just round the corner from the train station. 5 pints of Skull Attack (SA) and you'll be landed!

coming from cardiff — i can pass comment.
Got to bristol.--
Actually head to sophia gardens/ castle grounds / cathedral road - some nice pubs there. or pontcanna area for bars / restaurants.
Mill lane (edge of center) at lunchtime if sunny is nice area.
Check out the cardiff art school website for any exhibitions/galleries as there are alot of small independent galleries around the bay.
plenty of decent little boutiques etc in the various arcades (castle arcade etc)
And stay in john malkovich's hotel. well central and a nice gaff.

- benfal990
