Few years ago Davis deserved some attention because it was quite interesting, years on and his work all still looks the fucking same.
Even in the realm of generative graphics there are far more talented people deserving of attention because their work actually evolves beyond a random vector jizz stain.e.g Flight404, much more talented than Davis and the work actually changes from client to client and he doesn't go round calling himself an artist or any of that crap.
I mean look at that JD vs BMW video, where hes acting like a massive wanker and saying how inspired he was by the car... what comes out of it? a bunch of soul less generative vector crap that could have appeared at any point in the past 7 years of his portfolio for any client, it has no individually defining feature that sticks it to that client other than the shape of a wheel arch

i know him from a few nice long chats and he's down to earth and stands up for his art. i can highly appreciate it in an age where the stench of marketing kills any and all artistic endeavour in design.

The criticism seems a bit too personal. I simply think Josh doesn't fit in with CR's ideas of what a designer should look and sound like...
I know we all have to big our work up, but sometimes there is little more to it than making pretty pictures. Purely aesthetic, purely subjective. But CR love the "added value" side of design, sometimes trying to intellectualise it more than is necessary.
CR can be a bunch of pretentious twats sometimes.

"what the fuck do you know about "journalism"?"
-
So now I have to know about journalism to apreciate if an argument is poor or not.... good to know.I don't know a lot about journalism, true but I know this article is shit.
- dyspl0
this article is absolutely uninteresting, and well that's the main point to focus.
being heavily tattooed as an argument against J.davis is childish, and very weird for a professional journalist. the same goes with the everyone could do it.... is what we have to fight everyday? you know "now with photoshop every one could do it"....
In term of crticism I would be more interested in seeing an article about established studios doing work for companies / countries that clearly questions the problem of ethic in our job. fox ex psyop chinese olympic games campaign (which were great, but..), the tazer website currently in EC part, and having the pros and cons of doing such projects.
- what the fuck do you know about "journalism"?Khurram
- I know a bit about graphic design, which is the subject of the article right?dyspl
- sooo knowing that I might be able to decide weither or not the argument or good or bad. IMOdyspl
- IYO. Glad you can see that. Cos you made a comment on professinal journalism.Khurram
- honestly argument put is this article are weak for a JOURNALIST don't you think? this what was I meant, no more.dyspl
- It's just a dude's personal opinion on an event he attend. Designed to be controversial.Khurram
- If you disagree with it, furry muff, don't know where "professional journalism" comes into itKhurram
- it's not even controversial, there are not argument ni it. You post above mine as more argument than the article.dyspl
- wait, did you write that article? you seem pretty sensitive on the "journalism" criticismdyspl
- OMG IT'S SHIT!!Khurram
- No, i just think you have trouble distinguishing what is "journalism" and what is an opinion pieceKhurram
- As well as the difference between a magazine and a newspaper.Khurram
- you should take a break. having a hard day today?dyspl
- srsly "an opinion piece" don't kid me... It's an article in the creative review blog. It has to be printed to be journalism?dyspl
- *sigh*. You just don't get it...Khurram
- Khurram, i see your point. But having tattoo's doesn't have to do anything with the work.janne76
- so it is retarded opinion.janne76
- feel free to let me know what I might miss here in a post V. those notes a are too small, anoying as hell.dyspl
- But it's funny, that's writing, HAHA!!! HUMOUR!!! Takin piss... One man's opinionKhurram
- one bitter man's opinion hiding behind CR.dyspl
- Well, you can charicaturise him however you want. I just see a dude aggrieved that a Typo conference left him none the wiser vis-a-vis aka about typoKhurram
- wiser vis-a-vis aka about typoKhurram
- Khurram0
Yeah but he's become well pretentious withit, like it's all deep and that cos its "computer generated", like it wouldn't make a difference if he'd just used spirograph, and he's jsut doin the same thing he wuz 10 years ago it hasn't moved on like you know how Cool Herc started cross-fading and that. It's just like that. So i agree with it. What he said.
- digdre0
he even has his own apple page

- MrT0
^^ Horp - fair point. In CR's defence wasn't the article damning the lineup of speakers at a type conference? Regardless of JD's standing in general, it's a stretch to consider him in any way a typographer. I like his work too, but typography it surely is not.
- digdre0
bad advertising is advertising too
- Horp0
^ Well that would be my arguement to CR too MrT... If you think he's irrelevant why mention it, why not fill your magazine with what you think is relevant, rather than making sneering snipes at the people who you consider to be of no contemporary relevance.
- Because the author was writing about the event and Davis was part of that event.Josev
- MrT0
If people on here haven't even heard of Mr Davis, maybe his light didn't shine bright enough or long enough for him to be beyond criticism for his current mediocrity.
- digdre0
wtf, no animated gifs in the comments? pfft

Horp forget Kool Herc... I believe Jimmy Saville was doing the continuous mix thing some 5 years previous.
You are bang on though mate, his Westside block parties and mixing breaks, were arguably the blueprint for Hip Hop, Break dance etc.
- Josh who?neue75_bold
- adigdre
- There is an ongoing arguement about whether it was KH or JS who first cross faded. I think they probably ...Horp
- both discovered it independently of each other and maybe JS was first, but Herc could not have known about Jimmy Saville.Horp
- i did it first.digdre

The problem with the industry today is that it evolves so rapidly that amazing breakthroughs such as Joshua Davis' original work leave only the visual evidence, which dates and becomes old very quickly. I'm no fan of Joshua Davis' work but I think CR is very childish if it chooses only to look at the artifacts and forgets completely that the artifacts were once the result of something totally new and groundbreaking.
CR should be less juevenile in it's journalistic approach.
I once saw Cool Herc do a set at a hip hop festival. He was shit. Just a fat old man sat behind a couple of turntables, literally just playing one record after another and cross fading. Pitched between dazzling sets by the best scratch DJs of the time he seemed pathetic and people booed. It was easy to deride him for his poor skills, bit to do so would be to forget entirely that Cool Herc was the first person to ever even think about using two turntables, linked by an old theatre lighting fader he had found discarded behind a playhouse in Manhattan.
Respect should go to people for the innovation, even if the results of their moment pale over time as other advances are made.
We might as well cast scorn on the bloke who invented the lightbulb for making such a shitty, dull, horribly yellow piece of crap.
