*facepalm. If you live in a country where the tap water is safe to drink, drink it. Otherwise you are wasting money and filling landfills with bottles.

When I lived in India years ago, some smart business-minded little kids had this idea, they bottled tap water and figured out how to reseal the bottlecaps so that it looked exactly the same as brand new from the bottling plant.... I only know this not just because I got sick from drinking the water, but because I saw kids in an alley doing this... they had quite a smart production line and a little cap sealing device that made it had to tell "real" from "recycled" bottles... and yes, I did get a few stomach ailments.... never sure from what though.... I think Bisleri and others have modified the bottle caps to make this harder these days.... but inguenuity will probably catch up....

I dont think the water issue is as much with the supply, but with all the old-a$$ pipes in NYC apt buildings that carry it. I imagine that water is pretty good when it starts out, but pass it thru a bunch of 100 year old rusty steel pipes and it is bound to pick up some crud.
