OK. So I've got a client who wants me to work on his sites. I do a whois, and his former designer (he doesn't know this yet!) and internet provider is the registered owner of the domains!
What do I do to get the domains in my client's name?

contact the former designer and do a transfer of ownership.

Last time that happened to me, we just called the guy who owned it and he handed over the rights. He said the guy we were designing the new site for was a pain in the ass and he'd gladly hand us the site and rights to the domain. Find out all the info you can on the person who owns it, track him/her down, and give them a call.

Typically if you are working through Godaddy or a similar registrar and you both have accounts, he can just click transfer, enter your user ID, and it will transfer the domain over to you.

I bought a domain from someone in another country recently and although it took days to figure out how to pay them, the actual transfer took less than a minute.

This is either very easy or a total pain, depending on egos and record keeping, especially as Go Daddy depends on certain things being the same, like the same credit card number, etc if your client forgot the password...
