It felt awkward running MAMP when there is an Apache installed in every Leopard. I followed moth's advice, spent a few hours but I learned a thing or two on the way.
I just have no idea how to use this virtual hosts script - that's ok, they're easy to set up manually.BTW, here's how you set up Parallels or VMware to test your PHP sites in IE: http://seansperte.com/entry/Sett…

It took me 1.5 days to get an up to date LAMP configured on my Mini. Now I'm using MAMP because I just don't want to go through with it again though it would be easier this time around since I done it before. I did get to learn some shell commands though...

MAMP Pro. http://www.mamp.info/en/mamp-pro…
I haven't been able to get the DynDNS stuff working right, but other than that it's fantastic.

I would just learn to do it manually.
Update PHP to the one here (I would avoid using 5.3 right now);

macports is just a lot more flexible. i have 3 versions of php and two versions of mysql installed so i can reproduce any of my live server configs by just changing a path in my profile. once you get the hang of the terminal you'll wonder how you lived without it.

What does MacPorts actually do for PHP/mySQL?
If I have to ask, I guess it's not for me?

Mamp is easier if you're a designer, not a system admin, as mySQL isn't part of the MacOS install...
Otherwise, http://www.macports.org/ is cool.

I use MAMP and it is brilliant. MAMP Pro, even better.

What's the best way to set up PHP locally on a Mac? Do you use the system's original Apache installation and configure it or add a separate one, ie. through MAMP?
