Looking for some names on a shop that can handle building a portal site.
Ideally not a place where their main focus is in marketing / mini sites.
Design and build (front end and back end connectivity)

Firstborn does good marketing sites not sure if they can do large site build. I worked with them before and they do pretty good stuff.

Firstborn can do it. I worked on one with them. Concentric is also very capable as I have also worked with them on one.

Agreed. Most of the shops can do it when given the chance but it would be hard to convince others if there are no work examples to show.

They do great work. I used to work with Arnaud years back. I do question if they have fully developed a large site. Maybe just more design and light front end dev.

Oh you could also go for the big consulting firms like Sapient and Razorfish but I bet they cost $$$.
Other big ones like AKQA, LBi, Detica, Agency.com...
