Looking for a font that can work in a very very small size and also scale large well. This would be for screen use.
Is there such a thing or is it better to go for custom font? If so, who?

Fedra Sans.

helvetica?

Something that can work in 8pt or smaller.

akkurat

Well I think any decent sans would do. Only serif typefaces really need separate display versions.
National, Gotham, Akkurat, Helvetica Neue, Univers, Benton Sans, TheSans, Proxima Nova... these would all work, just to name a few.

Benton Sans!!!!!
- d_rek0
Trade Gothic Screen

under 8 pts on screen? that could be tough

DIN or Schneidler HTF is good but it does get cranky when it get small.
And pixel fonts are not an option because it will be smoothen out regardless of what font goes in...

Ah, screen use. Didn't realize that's what you're up against. Well, at 8 pt. Verdana on screen is your best bet; and at larger sizes, either Fedra would actually resemble Verdana more than the other suggestions we've made. Both Fedra and Verdana have enormous x-heights.
Just don't use Verdana larger than text size, whatever you do. Looks terrible any bigger than 12 pt. on screen. But you prolly already know that...
- < I retract the recommend for National. Great face, but small x-height.gramme

Poynter Gothic Text / Poynter Agate

Oh wait, do you mean HTML text or rendered text image at 8pt? think I misunderstood.

Nono, it would be for rendered and not HTML.
I dont want to use Verdana because of what gramme has mentioned.
Ideally, I would want something thats condensed, can work under 8pt and play nice up to 40pt.
- by what gramme said.. works nice small but ugly when big********

Ah. Then Benton Sans, Fedra, Gotham, or TheSans would work for all the sizes you describe. Large x-height on all of those.

I will try those. Thx gramme

Just putting it out there but anyone know a good typographer who can handle what I described?
