I have an iMac and a Canon i9900.
Can anyone recommend a good (yet inexpensive) calibrator? Or are there places that you can take your equipment to to do it for you or rent a calibrator from?

I have the colormunki system and a colorvision datacolor.
The colormunki is actually very good for the price - I wouldn't recommend the Colorvision Datacolor though - it is what we were using a few years ago and now use it for rough calibration on our PC.
We use the colormunki on our Mac's and calibrate it to our Epson printers and it is pretty tight.

Nice. Thanks GoCrocodile!
I print a good amount of photos and design work. Is there any major difference between the photo and the designer version of the colormunki?

No difference - except color - and sometimes the design pack comes with a pantone book for their GOE inks. Ours did anyways.
The designer one is white and photo one is black.
Cheers,
