web 2.0 has really lost all meaning - especially when coming from a client. Really, what do they mean? more wet floor reflections and peeling stickers or are they talking more about dynamic content and ajax?
If they want to follow traditional trending have a look here for some inspirtion:

So you want examples of sites that are characterized as facilitating communication, information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web?

Web 2.0 sites look very old fashioned now.
Here are some sites if you really can't convince him otherwise...

also, gradients are bad for the environment. waste of bandwith.
- flashbender0
what if you use green gradients?
Are those still bad for the environment?

green is always ok.

just pitch papervision to them. show them some samples of 3d websites. get them excited. then triple the budget.

Show them QBN. get them to ask the question themselves and sit back and watch.

I get the feeling you/your client are envisaging web 2.0 as design-led elements, when really its about communication, interaction, user-centric content etc. sounds like you still need to find out specifically what they want....

Web 2.0 is an attempt to assimilate innovative forms of navigation / user interfaces to dumb down the internet for the earths lowest common denominators... "Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform."... It is a business-minded punch in the stomach of originality...

BIGGER FONTS! MORE WHITESPACE! ROUND GRADIENT BUTTONS!
But hey, lots of 2.0 stuff really just means focussing and doing a few things right rather than trying to do everything....
