I want to add posts that have say 50 images. Rather than full images I need thumbs, that when clicked open a larger image in the same page - kind of like indexhibit. I've tried nextgen and it opens images on a blank page which is rubbish.
I've tried indexhibit but it's limited.

you can choose 'insert gallery' but i prefer a plugin called 'NextGen Gallery"

just reread your comment sorry. next gen shouldn't be doing what you're saying, but here's an alternate that's pretty good:

you can get some heinous balls ups if you use a theme that isn't upgrade to the version of wordpress you're using. the latest version (2.8) has meant that a lot of themes that worked fine fgor 2.7 go screwy in parts as the 'functions' page needs updating to match 2.8.
this might be the issue you're having, so try changing the theme to the basic and see what works and what doesn't. you can then change the theme back and chase the developer to update or install a previous version of wordpress.

So I have the thumbnail gallery now linking to a main image on the smae page. However, when you click on the main image it takes you to the same image but on a blank page. Anyway of getting the main image to take you back to the thumbs? Using nextGEN

yeah, that sounds similar to the javascript error you get with lightbox at times. sometimes scripts outrank the image gallery ones and cancel them.
all i can think is that if the theme is meant to be working on the version of wp you've installed then you have a plugin installed that's screwing with it.
i'd turn off all plugins except the gallery one and try them one by one.
just to make sure, you have tried a different theme and seen that the error is still happening yeah?

Did you figure this out? For the life of me I can't get wp or a plugin to display a gallery with a Main Image and Thumbnails underneath --- then simply click thumbnail -> update main image.
NextGen is great, but more of a gallery CMS, rather then just integrated directly with posts.

Recently i've been marveling at these.

i've bought a few and they are much more than just a theme. they add a ton of custom settings/galleries/portfolios to the wp-admin functionality. seriously impressed.- i've used about 10 of these for clients. some truly amazing stuff for budget driven clients.airey

yeah, nextgen is more fist-up-rectum than it's worth.

at the moment i'm just using the gallery shortcode and lightbox which aint a solution here:

cheers.
never realised themes were actually built with extra features. Almost like apps. Be great if they sold such features as modules, rather then entire skins.Anyway - if figure out will post it here. Trying to steer a project away from x-cart into wordpress and running out of time!

seems to work with wp v3 - though haven't got into the guts of it yet.

i love you.
fucking hell. i've had to hire developers to sort out the custom fields to do something similar. fucking awesome.
