So this Google thing got me thinking, is a Netbook type of machine the way of the future? Would it be possible for you to do all your work using web applications? I guess theoretically it is possible, even for designers, although I haven't used any of the online image editing tools too much.
Other than design and music, I don't use any offline applications any more.

I guess fonts would be a major issue with online design apps...how would that work?

Try doing print or display work using web apps - fuck that.

- Even my MBP pumped full of RAM can't handle a 500MB Photoshop document without locking up for 10 minutes.5timuli

application service providers have been trying to get us to rent their software for years. and if my memory serves me right. real estate agents used to use dumb terminals (back in the late 80s) to access the what now has become MLS (MRIS)

There are lots of problems with this type of setup. First if your internet goes down, your computer or "netbook" becomes a paperweight. Reminds me of IP phones....which I am not a fan of since, your internet goes down and you lose phone/network and internet all at once! Not sure what Googles plan is with it's new Chrome OS (perhaps it will cache certain things) but I don't really ever see this becoming the norm accept for the most basic user. This idea is not new at all (think of dumb terminals) and I remember in college when my professor swore that applications and Operating Systems would one day be completely web-based.
Personally, I don't see anything like this happening for a long time. There are just too many flaws. Web-based apps have certainly gained popularity and I think they will continue to do so, but they have a very specific place in the market imo. Guess we will have to wait and see. I would be stoked if Google would come out with an actual full blown operating system to compete with windows...not just a linux based shell that can do only basic things like run internet.
- they're pushing forward so you don't have to be connected. and once your online again, syncing beginsbrandelec
- yes net uptime is very key , but the stability of the net could reach that of radio and tvBattleAxe
- yeah, it could likely be a solution for basic computing soon...but I still think we are ages away from full on web-based computing.designbot
