Hey guys,
Since I've upgraded to Fireworks CS4 only to realize that its a bug-ridden-crashing-pile-of-poo, and Adobe admits it! (& now cant revert to FW CS3 due to licensing issues at this contract arghhg)
Im forced back to using Photoshop CS4 for a web design contract that I'm working on...
I was looking forward to using Master Pages in Fireworks for shared elements like page nav etc, so I didnt have to update each files navigation each time the client makes a change.
Question: Does PS CS4 have ANYTHING like this, Im searching but seems like its a no?
Can I have a navigation .PSD, thats shared accross multiple PSD's that I only need update once to update all pages?
Thanks alot, im thinking its a *no* (why the hell not)
I miss FW CS3 already

Just don't even start to use Flash CS4.
- Is it bug ridden also?blackspade
- So far FW is the only app ive had issues with in the Suiteblackspade

CS5 must be ready soon.

Yea I cant wait that long, need to sort it now. Cant believe adobe released FW CS4 in that state, they should be ashamed! Its not fit for what its advertised. FW CS3 was stable and fine!
Did a quick search of the Twitter, so many out-crys of its shoddy'ness
Even the devs blog for FW4 are admitting it has many many issues.

So anyone know if you can do something like this in PS CS4 ??
- ********0
just create a group of layers with your navigation in and copy it between files - not as efficient but not that much of a ball-ache
- this is what im trying to avoid and why fireworks would rock if it was usable :/blackspade

or even better create all your page designs in one file (with groups of layers) and share the navigation group between them... sorry not with it today
- the files would be way too large to do this, and they will all be diff page lengths etcblackspade

thanks for responses guys but neither are ideal solutions...
Any idea where I could source FW CS3 trial .dmg installer for Mac, now that adobe have replaced it with CS4

blackspade - not true at all - a 72dpi file with hundreds of layers is easily manageable.
oh and this has worked for me for years - never touch firefox... but each to their own!- Fireworks you mean ;) maybe your files are light, one page is already 40mbs, so add 20+ more pages to 1 file and thats gonna be way to big man!blackspade
- be huuugeblackspade
- not really - saying that i also do metre aquare art prints at 300dpi so im used to heavy files - do you need more ram?********
- nope I have 4 gigs on new MBP, just seems to already be lagging a bit in PS, weird.blackspade
- thats more ram than me so something is going on...********

Do you use Layer comps in PS ckentish ?
- ********0
of course, how about you? yep sorry - meant fireworks lol, as i said i'm not with it today

Yea im slowly getting back into PS after using FW for so long, I can see layer comps will help for some pages
Maybe converting the nav to a smart object will allow me to share it accross pages, & only need to update it once??
- ok no that aint gonna work, cos I need the text to remain editable, can smart objects have multiple layers, and live text?blackspade

thats a possibility as well.
people swear by fireworks but i only used it for a while years ago so can't really comment about it these days.
photoshop is a beast - i have been using it for over 10years but because i am self taught i keep discovering new features that would have saved hours in the past.
e.g. once you have set up your layer comps there are scripts (under automate) for automating saving all the comps as files - well handy when doing revisions to website page designs - big timesaver.

k looks like layer comps and smart objects might just be enough to do what I want, thanks for yr input
- blackspade0
so a .psb file isnt an external file as such...
http://www.webdesignerforum.co.u…the one thing im still confused about is can I share a single smart objects .psb accross multiple .psds :/ so when I edit the .psb it updates any psds that use it?
- ********0
have no idea but sounds like it would be very useful
- blackspade0
if you create a smart object from a folder (can be a folder with multiple layers within) and then right click on it and "export contents" it creates an external ".psb" file (Photoshops large file format)
Now just trying to work out if I can then import this .psb into multiple .psds and have it update all files simultaneously on save.
if you can you're right, it'd be v handy.
